Beijing's old neighborhoods of narrow lanes - hutong - and one
story courtyard homes are fast disappearing. The few that do remain are in the midst of a
gentrification process. This is probably good for the little that is left of Beijing's architectural
heritage, as old homes are being restored rather than torn down. But that is not much consolation for the low and middle income families being
displaced by the process. In spite of all the change it is still possible from time to
time to encounter some quiet and distinctly Beijing urban spaces. This garden of potted plants
and flowers tended by a hutong gardener sitting in front of his mom and pop convenience store
is one such space. |
