Steamed Buns, Beijing - 20 January 2009
The bamboo baskets are filled with "baozi" which means more or less "something wrapped up in a package". In this case various meat and vegetable fillings are wrapped in bread dough and then steamed. Chinese chives and egg or mushrooms and Chinese cabbage are a couple of my favorite kinds of baozi. At this stand, an all pork filled bun goes for about 12¢, other varieties are about a dime each. Several of these - I'm usually good for four, sometimes five - make a great hot breakfast on a cold winter day.
