Every time I see this wretched Olympic slogan, I am struck by the narrow, narrow-minded vision it extols. The notion "one world" is of course not the problem; we do, after all, share the earth for better or worse. It's the "one dream" which rankles. According to my dictionary, in addition to something which happens when we sleep, the word "dream" means hope, aspiration or ambition. It seems the slogan is telling us that we should be content to live in one world inhabited by people who all have the same hopes, aspirations and ambitions. Please. How dreary! Wouldn't it be more in keeping with the spirit of the Games to say "One World, Many Dreams"? Well, apparently not this year at these Games in this country...
