Chinese management technique: Staff are lined up on the street in front of the place of employment, made aware of their many shortcomings and exhorted (often loudly and at length) to do a better job. The managers and supervisors standing in front glare, scowl and look fierce (or try to, as the case may be). The event may or may not involve having the staff shout and perform pep rally like cheers. For a while, one restaurant near my home had its beleaguered staff jogging through rush hour traffic everyday. This particular group of waiters, however, looks virtually immune to exhortation. |
